With Apple's iPad and Google noises about a tablet (Microsoft, where are you?), I had a thought today. A lot of the old (old like 1950s & 60s) sci fi futurist stuff had some kind of screen in every room that was a communication and information interface. At the time I think they were envisioned as terminals, since a "computer" would obviously take up a whole room.
Now all the thought and buzz about tablets is about a device to carry around. But think about it. How cool would it be to have a tablet computer hanging on your kitchen wall? I still find voice interfaces a little kludgy, but they'd be just nifty to call up a recipe or watch youtube while cooking or do a Skype call to say "could you pick up buttermilk on the way home?". For $500 or so that seems perfectly wonderful. Maybe another one in the bedroom. Why carry the laptop around if you have computers everywhere you need them? Lots of people have tvs in every room (i don't own one), but they're so one-way. I'm looking forward to a tablet in every room!
